With the "Conversation" pattern, Masons follows the well-established tradition of Chinoiserie garden tableaux. Chinese figures in black transfer printing are brought to life by a slap-dash application of watercolor-like enamels. In the primary scene, seven figures appear -- caught in the midst of animated conversation. Though not identical, a similar scene decorates the other side. Thinly applied colors create shimmering blue and pink highlights, including a field of crescent shaped clouds sheltering the scenes.
Borders of florals, stylized butterflies and grid-work reserves circle the neck inside and out. Patches of bright orange/red separating the scenes foreshadow a similar element in the later "Red Scale" pattern. A thin wash of ochre lustre on the rim and inside the handle approximates the effect of costly gilding.
