The entire tradition of English nursery and souvenir mugs was based on the strategy of an inexpensive utilitarian product made appealing by virtue of an irresistible decoration. The common British phrase "cheap and cheerful" comes to mind.
Here we have a very simple earthenware mug decorated with a single transfer print in black--no embellishments. But what we also have are cats--three of them--coping with quite human gestures with the trials of a weekly tub bath.
While the dates are a bit off to imply a direct connection, the scene certainly falls in the tradition of illustrating cats in almost human guise that reached a peak in the work of British artist Louis Wain
