This flat bottom amphora vase recalls the similar shape of the famous Portland Vase, but there the neo-classical character ends. The basalt surface is decorated in the "Chinese Flowers" pattern, consisting of scattered famille rose style blossoms executed in heavy, glossy enamels. The contrast between the shine of the colorful enamels and the flat black basalt provides the principal aesthetic punch of the pattern.Wedgwood finishes the piece with a red-orange pinstripe at the edge of the rim and foot.
The diminutive size of this example adds an extra element of charm.
