Mason's rich, deep cobalt provides the appropriate ground for their wild "Elephant Foot" pattern. The pattern has the appearance of a random offering of circular and stocking shape reserves knitted together with rich gilt vines, leaves and flowers and studded with brilliant orange and peach carnation-like florals. The circular reserves take on a kaleidoscope quality with floral and foliage patterns in cobalt, gilt and orange. However, the stocking shape reserves provide the great contrast and excitement of this pattern. Quick execution and a sense of whimsy pervades these hand-painted orange and gilt animal studies. On this deep platter, two of these reserves feature little birds among foliage while a mythical bear-boar-wolf-fox-like creature inhabits the third.
