This Wedgwood vase form, here in a substantial size, suggests classical precedents, yet seems not to correspond exactly to any of the basic ancient shapes. Two loop handles run front to back on either side of the flared collar. Trellis devices loosely frame four fields for the figural reliefs that ornament the vase. Otherwise, only a narrow laurel band at the neck interrupts the expanses of rich lilac color.
Four draped female figures occupy the framed fields. One carrying a wreath represents the goddess Ceres. A second with a harvest basket at shoulder level is Pomona. Both can be identified by comparison with medallions in the Beeson Collection (Birmingham Museum of Art). The two additional figures, documented in a contemporary factory publication, come from a set of "Floral Girls" derived from Flaxman's "Dancing Hours." As expected on a vase of this scale, the relief is detailed and well-rounded.
