The simple elegance of Wedgwood's columnar basalt candlesticks requires no decoration. Still who can resist the addition of brilliantly colored blossoms in the famille rose style, derived from the Chinese tradition.  Chrysanthemum and peony type blooms, executed in thick shiny enamels, are scattered across the flat basalt surface. The effect depends upon contrasts: color against black; shine against matte. We have never examined such pieces in candle light, but imagine the impact would only be more magical.

A crisp dark red-brown pinstripe smartly finishes the edges.

Basalt wares enameled with the "Chinese Flowers" blossoms were introduced early in the nineteenth century, shortly before Wedgwood adapted the technique with European style floral sprigs. Judging from available examples, the Asian style was clearly more popular and was even revived late in the nineteenth century for the Capri line.

Though most frequently found on basalt, we have seen enameled floral motifs on almost all of Wedgwood's dry bodies: cane, drab, rosso antico, terra cotta and even an ultra-rare example of dark blue jasper. The resulting product never fails to provide satisfaction.
