The matte black surface of a simple egg cup form is enlivened by the addition of brightly colored floral sprigs in thick glossy enamels. In style the florals derive from Chinese famille rose patterns; the effect of the strong contrast between flat and shiny surfaces, however, seems wholly original to Wedgwood.
Dominating the piece is one large blossom with red petals shading to white edges. Smaller surrounding sprigs are depicted in red, blue, and ochre, all set off by green folliage.
