In the "Caledonian" pattern, a Scottish tartan print is arranged to open out around the flange of the plate creating a wonderful kaleidoscope plaid border. The center carries a rosette which both complements the border and creates a sense of focus for the pattern. On this salad size plate, Ridgway, Morley and Wear spice up the brown transfer printing with overglaze enamels in ochre and green.

Ridgway, Morley and Wear's "Caledonian" pattern is the tip of the iceberg of the obsession for all things Scottish which took England by storm in the mid nineteenth century. The interests ranged from Sir Walter Scott's writings to the Queen and Prince Albert's summer home at Balmoral, which incorporated Scottish plaids in the decor.
