An unusual scalloped blank indicates late 1820's production for this example of Masons "Lotus" pattern. The cobalt decoration, fired prior to the addition of other colors, is typically a bit fluid as evidenced in both the center and border detail shots. Added enamel decoration in orange, pink and green knit the center study into the familiar motif of lotus blossom, pod and overarching pink flower. Three clusters of orange and pink florals form the border of this pattern within an outer band of tight fretwork and floral reserves. Finally, Masons finishes the edge in ochre lustre, approximating the effect of gilt (at a lower cost).

The combination of Mason's straight line impressed mark with the scalloped blank in this example of their "Lotus" pattern is a bit of a puzzle. The more complex, European derived shape is characteristic of wares from the 1830's and later (bearing the printed crown and banner marks). We associate both the "Lotus" pattern and the impressed marks with the earlier simple shapes derived directly from export wares. Only recently have we come to consider the Masons impressed marks continuing well into the late 1820's.
