Bodley's small oval platter becomes memorable through the very simplest of means. Four branched twigs of blossoming hawthorn emerge from a narrow border to stand in stark contrast to a totally undecorated ground.
Unable to eliminate all decorative ornament, Bodley balances his natural sprays with a more structured border. Alternating light and dark blocks contain tiny sprays of foliage and chrysanthemum blossoms. Within this border is placed a purely geometric band suggestive of fans and tassels.
