In the Bells' imaginary vision of "Palestine," Arab traders seem to have stopped at some remote outpost to conduct a bit of commerce before moving on. Familiar elements include the requisite palm trees, ruined capital and exotic tomb as well as a distant bridge (or aqueduct) and farther distant village. The pattern is executed in a medium blue transfer on a simple, somewhat heavy pottery blank.

In the only reference we know of for Scottish pottery, Scottish Ceramics, Henry Kelly details the Bell partnership and even illustrates examples of the "Palestine" pattern (p. 115, ill. 21.30). Dating the wares is somewhat general as Kelly divides the patterns into two groups, 1841-1880 and 1881-1912.
