The clear distinction between the two elements of Ridgway's "Asiatic Plants" --the botanical study and patterned border--makes the series adapt especially well to bi-color transfer printing. In this example the flowering sprigs are executed in crisp black transfer and the border in red.

The border design resembles the Indian textile patterns featuring white figures on a single color field that had begun to be copied by European manufacturers and became the popular choice for the kerchiefs we know as bandanas.

While there is uncertainty over which Ridgway partnership produced "Asiatic Plants," the presence of the impressed Ridgway royal arms mark on this dinner plate indicates production by either William Ridgway (1830-1854) or Ridgway, Morley, Wear and Co. (1836-1842).
