This mid size medium blue transfer pearlware jug is decorated with an arrangement of oriental objects and florals displayed against a fine stippled ground. The group, featured on each side of the jug, is dominated by a tall baluster shape vase and a jardiniere or basket, and includes other mysterious exotic objects--perhaps implements from the tea ceremony. Exotic flowers fill the vase and jardiniere, their tendrils extending out over the surface of the jug. Similar flowers are scattered around the neck, inside and out, as well as down the exterior of the handle. A fine beaded border finishes the pattern at the rim, while at the foot the ground simply dissolves.

This pattern is an example of a small group of medium and dark blue patterns based on still life arrangements--with objects both oriental and occidental. Marked examples date from the 1820's through the mid 1830's. The nature of many of the foreign objects were doubtless as mysterious to the pattern engraver as they appear to us today--and perhaps that is the point of the pattern.
