Four puckish pierrots spar over an oversize pack of tooth picks commenting whimsically on the Shakespearean quotation from the lovesick Romeo: "He jests at scars that never felt a wound." The framed vignette is framed by bands of bright enamel colors--orange, ochre, green and finally a brilliant floral band on a deep blue ground.

The "Card Motto" series depicts imps inhabiting a tabletop world to illustrate quotations.
The "Card Motto" series depicts imps inhabiting a tabletop world to illustrate quotations. A variety of border treatments was employed with the framed illustrations.
The border treatment on this variant reflects a number of different ornamental influences: Chinese style florals, classical meander and vine wreath bands, and under the central orange enamel panels Renaissance scroll work with urn and birds. The "Formosa" notation on the reverse refers not to the overall pattern, but to the outer border which turns up in different Wedgwood patterns.
