In this Ashworth period Masons Ironstone piece, the bowl shape extends down to an unusual short-waisted foot. Ashworth continues Mason's use of a traditional light blue transfer with red and orange enamels for this version of their "Jardiniere" pattern. Execution here is a bit more careful than one usually sees. The orange ground at the base of the design is carefully, consistently applied on both the exterior and interior decorations. Still, the red painted decorations of the floral design and border reflect the idiosyncracies of hand decoration found throughout Mason's Japan patterns. Ashworth finishes the piece with a pinstripe of gilt to the bowl rim.

Masons "Jardiniere" pattern is one of a class of patterns referred to as "Japan" patterns. To the novice this can be somewhat confusing as one of the patterns of this class is called "Japan." These patterns all share a common color palette based on light (and sometimes cobalt) blue with red and orange enamel highlighting. Ochre lustre and/or gilt enhancements often accompany these patterns.
