Enoch Wood and Sons has one of the most distinctive and original borders we can think of in their "European Scenery" series. The border consists of tippets of lace draped, pleated and seemingly held in place around the perimeter of the piece with decorative nail-head devices. On top of this border of anchored fabric, a convolvulus vine, blossoms, buds, and leaves meanders about, again following the shape of the piece. This light, lacey arrangement creates the frame for a series of continental views.
In this black transfer platter, the view seems to be a panorama of an Italian mountain village. We are drawn into the view by a group of three natives, possibly vineyard workers, standing on a foreground riverside. Other workmen tend a large boat nearby. Across the river we see a village of Italianate architecture with mountains in the far distance.
