E. F. Bodley's "Japanese" pattern fills the plate surface with large-scaled Asian objects and motifs executed in unusual deep red/orange printing and filled out with enameling in similar tones. The result is monochrome compositions of a hue that must have stood out strikingly in the retailer's shops.
Here we are presented with a tightly composed still life of Japanese objects. The curved profile of a double gourd-shaped vessel contrasts the rod-like forms of two rolled scrolls, against the free form outlines of a floral and foliage spray. The decoration on the vessel adds interest and complexity by creating a picture within a picture effect: hovering sparrows on the upper globe; swimming ducks and iris below.
As with the entire "Japanese" pattern, images are drawn with a clear distinct line that compliments their assertive scale. A simple orange and gilt line defines the edge without adding the fussiness of a more elaborate border.
