E. F. Bodley's "Japanese" pattern fills the plate surface with large-scaled Asian objects and motifs executed in unusual deep red/orange printing and filled out with enameling in similar tones. The result are monochrome compositions of a hue that must have stood out strikingly in the retailer's shops.
In this example Bodley presents an Asian style depiction of pond life with bamboo stalks providing the vertical element, balanced by the pond surface with lotus blossoms. Swallows add a hint of motion. The scene is framed by a fine line that defines a rectangular field, lobed at the top and bottom. The perimeter of the frame is flanked by different blossoms and foliage and loops of a strange--to Western eyes at least--string of disc shaped beads.
As with the entire "Japanese" pattern, images are drawn with a clear distinct line that compliments their assertive scale. A simple orange and gilt line defines the edge without adding the fussiness of a more elaborate border.
