Knight, Elkin and Company create a frothy fantasy in their "Pennsylvania" pattern. Breezy trellis reserves alternate with floral clusters on contrasting solid grounds for the border of this scalloped blue transfer dinner plate. In the center a pole boat with four tourists and an oarsman floats through an imaginary land of Chinoiserie and Gothic architecture.

In "Pennsylvania" we see the work of a manufacturer who has abandoned the earlier detailed topographical depictions of American landscapes, but has retained the place name to hold onto a bit of the marketing advantage. The result is a highly improbable image of a place that for the British potter was still very far off and exotic. Virginia, Carolina and other US sites receive similarly bizarre treatment.
