In a vignette executed in dark teal green transfer, a young girl, dressed in a sun hat, opens the door of a rabbit hutch to feed its four occupants leafy vegetables. The surrounding border flange contains the letters of the alphabet in moulded relief.  

Like many alphabet plates, this example depicts a child at her everyday tasks--a good example for the Victorian child and a vestige of a long-lost childhood world for us.

Noel Riley in Gifts for Good Children: The History of Children's China Part One 1790-1890 (pp. 214/5) reveals the source of the image--Henry Anelay's illustrations for The Mothers Picture Alphabet, published by S.W. Partridge in 1862.

The accompanying verse reveals the identity of the country lass, re-enforcing our alphabetical lesson: "R begins Rosa: how pleased she appears / To watch those plump Rabbits with long silky ears!"
