With a crisp contrast between white and cobalt blue, this vase makes a snappy impression. Perhaps this is the effect of executing the mask handles in white--which usually appear in blue on this form. The figural frieze features scenes of ancient sacrifice separated by trees which intersect with the somewhat barbaric lion mask terminals of the handles.

This shape which appears in a variety of sizes is often called the "Portland" shape for lack of a more specific term. While similar in form to Wedgwood's signature shape, examination of the two will reveal differences: the Portland's profile is all together slimmer, the braid relief of the Portland's handles is more subtle and abstract, and the mask terminals of the handles could hardly be more different.
