These "Cornelian" pattern cups and saucers, executed in the rare brown and yellow transfer combination, boast the so-called "London" shape, popular in the period, but more often seen in bone china than earthenware. What we have here are parts of a tea service that possess some pretention as well as charm.
The pattern focuses on a pair of lovebirds perched on a feathery bough, in this example executed in brown transfer. A yellow transfer border, enhanced with a braid motif trims the edges of both cups and saucers -- inside and out. The arrangement is finished with floral sprigs which appear to have lightly fallen onto this yellow border.
