In a design inspired by Japanese porcelain, Christopher Dresser gives us cranes soaring and swooping over a turbulent surf. Dresser's water effect graphics include stylized waves, foam, and even splashed water drops. The dramatic border is anchored by a single flying crane in the center.

The durable stone body of these plates is a very pure white with contrasting transfer decoration executed in a brilliant blue. 

Christopher Dresser, one of the most important designers in Victorian England occupies for manufactured goods the sort of position William Morris occupies for arts and crafts.

Michael Whiteway in Shock Of The Old: Christopher Dresser's Design Revolution illustrates an 1860 Japanese blue and white flowerpot, acquired for the Victoria and Albert from the 1862 South Kensington Exhibition, which seems to be the inspiration for Dresser's design (p.34, plt.29).
