Pinder Bourne achieves a brilliant exercise in Japanism in this molded jug. The composition starts at the neck with four gilt edged panels separated by a brown framework. Each panel carries a molded decoration of prunus and a single crane picked out in pale blue on a very clear white ground. The base of the jug is decorated in a heavily molded light blue floral pattern over a cobalt pebbled ground. Medallions simulating gilded bronze are artistically placed around this section. A solid cobalt handle accented by a gilt fitting finishes this jug.

The round medallions, suggestive of the round Japanese crests (mons)--picked out in uneven gilding--are practically a trademark for the Japanesque patterns of Pinder Bourne, occurring on earthenware, porcelain and stoneware examples. These patterns and the favorite motif were passed on when Doulton acquired the Pinder Bourne works.
