This brown transfer salad plate from the "Indian Scenery" series features a particularly lovable (if somewhat prehistoric looking) armadillo. The center scene mixes typical fantasy garden scenery with a scientific study of this exotic animal. The pattern is finished with a deep border of contrasting dark and light grounds edged with scallop work and clusters of florals and fruit.

What do India and the American Southwest have in common? Evidently armadillos for one thing. Ironically we first encountered plates of this design while enjoying the hospitality of a family of Texan collectors. In the few moments before spying the "Indian Scenery" mark we imagined that we had discovered a very different sort of American historical subject. Immediately it became a favorite --- and that Texas family has remained a favorite as well.
"Indian Senery" is something of a rarity. However its great desirability comes from the exotic animal studies, not unlike "Giraffe" or the lions of "Africana."
