"Famille Rose" style florals executed in bright enamel colors and touches of gilt are randomly sprinkled over this black basalt vase in Wedgwood's "Chinese Flowers" pattern. A red-brown enamel stripe crisply finishes the neck and foot of this bottle form vase.

What a stroke of brilliance to enamel basalt in this manner.  Polychrome enamels become jewel-like on the flat black surface of the unglazed basalt. The ware is most commonly referred to as "Capri Ware," though Wedgwood did not adopt this trade name until about 1860.
