Mass and simplicity lend a sense of dignity and importance to this classically inspired vase. Substantial figures of four of the nine muses provide the ornament, enhanced only by realistic trees in relief and charmingly delicate floral groups. The "braided" handles terminate in somewhat primitive lion masks superimposed on the boughs of the trees.

This shape which appears in a variety of sizes (this being one of the larger) is often called the "Portland" shape for lack of a more specific term. While similar in form to Wedgwood's signature shape, examination of the two will reveal differences: the Portland's profile is all together slimmer, the braid relief of the Portland's handles is more subtle and abstract, and the mask terminals of the handles could hardly be more different. Still, this shape in this size makes a perfect display counterpoint to a full size version of the Portland Vase.
