Masons "Old school House" pattern is executed here on their early, simple flat ironstone plate. Rich, deep cobalt provides the ground for two dominant reserves executed in brilliant contrasting orange. The upper reserve, fan shaped, is an oriental derived floral study. The lower kidney shape reserve features a quickly rendered landscape study including the "Old School House." These strong elements are knitted together by a flamboyant network of florals and vines executed in gilt and orange enamels.

Masons "Old School House" and "Elephant's Foot" patterns are the two patterns which come to mind when we think of English Imari patterns. Manufacturers of porcelain, bone china and even other ironstone bodies had their versions of Imari wares, however no one achieved the panache of Masons. The freedom and confidence shown in the execution of these Masons patterns produces an exuberance un-equaled among other manufacturers or even the rest of the Masons canon.
