Large scale simple scrollwork seems to peel back the blue to the very edges of both cup and saucer revealing a beaded ground within. In the center, a little basket waits to be filled with blossoms like those in the center of each scrolled section.

In this pattern, we are reminded of Stubbs's great shell pattern of the same period. The same type of ornate scrollwork seems to be peeling back to reveal another layer within, a separate little world also anchored on the same beaded ground.
