A scene of stags bounding through an English park-like setting provides one of the center scenes for the dinner plates in Enoch Wood and Sons "Sporting Series." The series is marked by the contrast of the distinctive deeply scalloped border with the solid dark blue ground of the outer edge.

Wood's "Sporting Series" straddles a fine line between zoological species and hunting interests. Coysh and Henrywood in The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, 1780-1880 are inclined toward the traditional view that this is a series of hunting scenes. However in Volume II, they admit a scene of domestic animals is known. While five of the known subjects feature hunters, the ten or so remaining scenes could be viewed as zoological species studies just as easily. Wood provides no additional clarification; all titles for the scenes have been assigned by later scholars.
