This medium dark blue transfer salad plate features a view of the John Stevens house in Hoboken, New Jersey.  This is part of a series of American views by Joesph Stubbs,  immediately identifiable by its distinct "Spread Eagle" border.

In the scene, a woman and boy seem to have just stepped out into the garden from an elegant neoclassical country house.  The mansion, known as Stevens Villa, was erected in the mid 1780's.   

Ellouise Baker Larsen, American Historical Views on Staffordshire China, (no. 240, p. 111) noted that the source of this view was a drawing by William Birch, who also engraved and published the work in Country Seats of the United States of North America in 1808.  The work was included in Axel Klinckowstrom's Atlas, published in Stockholm, 1824.  

According to Larsen, Stevens used the villa during the summer months from 1786 to 1814 at which point he took up residence year round.  The villa burned in 1851. Construction then commenced on a second house which was given to the Stevens Institute of Technology (founded by the son of John Stevens) in 1910.  A contemporary building stands on the property today.
