Though perhaps most often found on teawares, Wedgwood also employed its enameled basalt technique on potpourris and vases--here a small posy holder. Bright flowers in the Chinese famille rose style would likely outshine most botanical specimens displayed in the vase. A simple rust red stripe at the top and bottom provides the only other ornamentation.

The term "Capri Ware" is often applied to all examples of Wedgwood's enamel decorated basalt or red stoneware, although the term was not adapted by the pottery until after 1860. Pieces actually bearing the script "Capri Ware" mark appear to date closer to the turn of the twentieth century and in general display a thinner enamel application. The vigorous enamel application of this example is indicative of mid-nineteenth century production.
