A central vignette of romantic waterside scenery is framed in a plait of magnolia branches on these salad size transferware plates. The maker is unidentified, designated only by the initials "G & C" impressed on the reverse.

The circular scene features an ancient ruined tower, nestled in woods, overlooking a quiet body of water.  A second tower ruin seen in the background as well as distant mountains off to one side may indicate the northern coast of England. The frame of magnolia boughs and blooms branches out in multiple directions, filling the well and extending on to the flange of the plate.

The body of the plate is light ivory in color with transfer printing executed in brown.

We have no record of who "G & C" might be.  However, the framing of the scene in a Japanesque manner with the asymmetrical, borderless design reveal an awareness of current aesthetic trends.
