In a black transfer-printed scene, notable for its delicate tones, two large birds--turkeys or some more exotic species--forage for feed on the grounds of a fanciful Asian structure--perhaps a garden folly. Their peaceful repast is about to be interrupted by the arrival of a downward swooping swallow.

In the more boldly printed border, hummingbirds flutter amidst sprigs of leaves and blossoms. 

While the designers of "Indus" resisted the asymmetric and geometric pattern elements popular at the time, it still reflects the Japanese influence on aesthetic era patterns. The close observation and naturalistic depiction of the featured birds reveal lessons learned from masters like Hokusai. And of course, a distant compound of Asian inspired buildings would only remind Westerners of their fascination with the beauty and mystery of the East.
