Brownfield's "Wisconsin" exemplifies the impact of Aesthetic design principles on popular tablewares. This soup plate is executed in chocolate brown transfer on Brownfield's ivory body. In the central diamond reserve, our attention is drawn to a sailing craft and three fishermen tending their nets off the starboard side. A circular band of Asian cloud pattern runs around the well of the soup creating a contrasting frame. Sunflowers extend over the cloud band from each side of the diamond shape reserve creating an elaborate frame for the view. Two different japanesque ground patterns are used for the centers of these sunflowers.
The flange of the plate is decorated with a co-ordinating pattern arrangement including a stylized rope motif at the edge of the well, a central band repeating the cloud pattern and a stylized outer band which appears to be triangular sections of sunflowers.

The late 19th Century was a great time for flat pattern in ceramics and other decorative arts. The "Wisconsin"pattern presents a picture, looking as if it was mounted on the plate surface, embellished by a sequence of graphic devices. Of course, the clear Japanese origins of a number of these graphic designs reveal "Wisconsin's" time period even more tellingly.
