Every now and then in the world of Staffordshire transfer patterns, one can not help but note the relation with fabric patterns of the day. This brown transfer milk jug is one such example.
The main part of the body is decorated with a very graphic, vertical floral stripe applied to correspond with the facets of the jug shape. Alternating stripes of fantastic Indian-inspired florals stand in contrast to solid ground diaper patterns trimmed with elaborate flourishes. Darker brown bands decorated with contrasting scrolls and dots circle the neck of the jug and trim the edge of the scalloped foot. To form the border, the Indian floral design is adjusted to run horizontally around the outside of the scalloped rim. Inside the rim and down the handle we see the design of the alternate brown stripe.
