On this light blue jasper dip charger, Wedgwood continues its homage to classical mythology with a center sprig of ladies--mortal or immortal--in flowing garments bearing flowers in basket or as wreaths. Though wingless, the puff of cloud behind them and the billowing costumes suggests an airborne state.

An arrangement of garland caught up in little ram's head fittings frames the center group and fills out the well of the charger.  Suggesting a theme of glory, the flange is decorated with an especially well-defined band of laurel with berries.  The charger is finished with a contrasting solid white molded band around the exterior edge.   

Who are these ladies? The floral attributes suggest the goddess Flora, but who is her friend?  The graceful figures and drapery recall the "Dancing Hours" frieze.  Shall we just call them flower sprites? Whoever they are, they would have appealed to the consumer around the turn of the twentieth century when British interiors showed renewed interest in eighteenth century design.
