The matte surface of this basalt teapot -- a generously sized version of a popular Wedgwood shape --  has been adorned with floral sprigs in brightly colored enamels, painted in the Chinese Famille Rose style. The enamels are slightly raised from the black surface, strengthening the vivid contrast. The only other ornamental element is a brownish-red line that accents the edges of the form.

The term "Capri Ware" is often applied to all examples of Wedgwood's enamel decorated basalt or red stoneware, although the term was not adapted by the pottery until after 1860. Pieces bearing the script "Capri Ware" mark appear to date closer to the turn of the twentieth century and in general display a thinner enamel application.
