A Japanese inspired arrangement is composed of a scalloped circular device and fan panel with swallows placed over a background spray of prunus. Prunus, pomegranate and bamboo reserves alternate with Japanesque geometric pattern fields in the border.

This version of Bates, Gildea and Walker's "Satsuma pattern uses a finely engraved black transfer which reads almost gray beneath brilliant orange-red enamel highlighting. Contrasting caramel lustre highlights finish the pattern with a sense of shimmer.

One notes some sporadic flaking to the rim of this piece typical of edge enamel detail from this period. A section of the enamel from about 4:00 to 5:00 is mostly gone but is only evident when one looks at the side of the rim.
