This white molded salt-glazed stoneware sugar caster is decorated with a fine molded pattern of dot, diaper and basketweave detail.  The three dimensional pattern resembles the patterns of more costly eighteenth century silver dining and tea accoutrements. 

The attractive pattern of piercing at the top adds one additional layer of ornamentation.

We seldom speak of provenance on this site; we seldom know the history of the pieces we offer. This piece is an exception and belonged to an exceptional collector, the late Harry Root. A retired executive with Marshall Fields, Harry filled his North Shore home with an extraordinary collection of early English stoneware and earthenware ("I am not a porcelain man." he would be quick to tell you.) As a volunteer, he was deeply involved in the decorative arts department of the Art Institute of Chicago, which a few years ago mounted a special exhibition drawn from his collection--its catalog remains a valuable reference source.
