For starters, Mason's 'Yellow Scale" is uncommon even when found in its most typical form--as the ground pattern on Hydra shape jugs. Those characteristic "Yellow Scale" jugs feature scenic reserves and, at the collar, a floral border set against a blank white ground.

This example is a more elongated six-sided shape with room for a more elaborate collar design featuring a ruby red ground, ochre details, and colorful secondary reserves. The main reserves on the "Yellow Scale" field are similar in style to those on the hydra jugs, but different in composition.

In all this variant offers the attractive "Yellow Scale" in a more coloful treatment that would beautifully compliment the more typical examples.

While Mason's was probably not exclusive in assigning certain surface patterns to certain jug shapes, some patterns naturally worked well with certain shapes, and one expects to find the typical combinations. This shape, for example, is most commonly associated with the "Double Landscape" pattern.
