This simply potted earthenware plate carries  the black transfer dedication "For Luke" above a scene of a little boy carrying a caged bird -- perhaps Luke himself with a treasured gift.

The rectangular scene is set off with an elaborate, almost gothic frame composed of c-scrolls combined in various positions.   

We'll never know what event this little plate commemorated, a birthday or a simple souvenir acquired from a pedlar in town for market-day. 

Trinkets and souvenirs such as this little plate received only the most casual attention in the potteries and seem to have been considered throw-away items.  We owe the survival of pieces like this to the sentiment of recipients like Luke or his doting mama who must have treasured them.
