Joseph Clementson packs much of the punch of this red transfer pattern into his large scale graphic border. The slight scallop detail of Clementson's blank complements his border of heavy brackets and contrasting reserves of delicate exotic florals. An additional floral group in the foreground of the center scene invites the viewer to look closer. For the nineteenth century consumer, this scene depicts an enchanted world of minarets, tents and wise turbaned men sitting beside a faraway river.

We generally associate the style of this pattern, the shape and weight of the blank to the 1830's. However Joseph Clementson was in partnership with John Read (Read & Clementson) from 1833-1839. The Clementson name alone would seem to indicate production after the partnership ended. (Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone & Granite Wares, Geoffrey A. Godden, 1999, pp 214, 301, 302). Dating evidence such as this show us the limitations of our neat categories.
