Decoration on this basalt spill vase divides into three complementary sections.  The primary design around the lower body is a vertical pattern of alternating bellflower and acanthus.  This is capped with swags of floral garland caught up in classical rams head devices.  The third section, just below the rim is a swirling arabesque frieze based on stylized honeysuckle.  The combination of these classical sculptural motifs executed in Wedgwood's black basalt body lends dignity and formality to the simple geometry of the vase.

The appeal of the spill vase persists despite the archaic status of its original purpose--a convenient receptacle for the narrow sticks used to transfer fire from the hearth to a candle or pipe.
