Cobalt, green, and brilliant orange fields divide this large Masons Ironstone jug, underscoring the design of the neck and main body. The oval orange field, overlaid with a Chinese style branch of purple, yellow and blue blossoms, becomes the ground for the "Landscape Scroll" motif. The small unfurled scroll is inscribed with a tranquil, almost monochromatic scene of mountain and sea.

A filigree of ochre overglaze enamel decorates the balance of the cobalt and green fields, creating the effect of gilding. The characteristic Masons serpent handle is executed in an eerie pale mint green tone with a caramel lustre for the face at the base of the handle.

We have owned a handful of Masons "Landscape Scroll" vases and jugs over the years, but not in this premium size. The most commonly seen examples of this pattern measure around five inches in height.
