A rosebud finial is the perfect final touch to this multi-sided sugar bowl and lid, decorated in black and a very pretty red transfer in the "Cornelian" pattern.  Taken all together, the effect is almost musical, and certainly suggestive of a romantic garden.

A braid patterned band (executed in red) outlines the shoulder, rim and edge of the lid.  The pairs of lovebirds (executed in black) which dominate the "Cornelian" pattern are placed across the central panels on each side of the body and lid.   Additional blossoms and bouquets are placed around body, rim and lid creating a sense of balance and finish to the melody. In an unusual touch red and black printing is allowed to overlap in the border areas.

Curious for a potter to take the bother of bi-color printing, but fail to take credit by utilizing a maker's mark. We have only recently encountered examples marked with the pattern name. Our attribution is based on the shapes "Cornelian" shares with J. & W. Ridgway's popular "Tuscan Rose" pattern--a fairly good piece of evidence, but not a sure bet. We would be grateful to anyone who can provide any additional clues.
