Masons has created something dazzling in this generous size Lotus pattern jug. The impressive size is matched by especially careful painting--a combination one often does not find in this potter's work. While other patterns might become lost or confused on a field of this breadth, the Lotus pattern easily fills and commands the space. The magnificent coral color blossom becomes all the richer with swaths of gilt for the inner petals. Cobalt transformed with gilt into leaves and the accompanying luscious pink buds enhance the virtuoso performance. Masons finishes this exercise with a border of stylized cross hatching in red and additional complementary coral buds around the collar of the jug.

"Lotus" is one of the most important patterns from Mason's early years, and--as the gilding and the careful execution indicate--this jug is no ordinary piece. While we have owned many examples of this pattern over time, this may be the most memorable.
