The variation of Mason's "Lotus " pattern that ornaments these three "Hydra" shape jugs is "all about" the bold contrast of white ground, Chinese red lotus petals and the deep cobalt blue lotus pad.
Like other Masons "Japan" patterns, the dominant cobalt areas are fired first--details are filled in around these great daubs of blue to create the pattern. In these examples, lighter blue transfer printing provides the guidelines for the enamelers who would give color to the brilliant lotus petals and place secondary color and gilt accents. Additional colors are used sparingly; green, for example, is limited to the floral band at the collar and the reserves of the narrow cross-hatched border.
The dominance of blue continues with the solid cobalt ground of the serpent handle. The carefully executed gilded scales of the reptile provide an interesting contrast to the spontaneous quality of the body of the jug.
