A crane, poised on one leg, takes shelter beneath a vast peony tree that emanates from a tiny fenced garden. The enchanting Eastern scene is captured by Davenport in cobalt and light blue with enamel highlights in pink and orange and with carefully applied touches of gilt. In the border floral sprays alternate with tiny vignettes of ducks.

The handle of this small relish dish creates an elegant contrast with cobalt beneath a gilded scale pattern. This royal touch is characteristic of all the holloware pieces Davenport created in this pattern.

Terrence Lockett and Geoffrey Godden identify this pattern as "No. 24" in their work on Davenport, noting that the pattern was of the most refined kind, with outstanding gilt highlights.  The quality of the pattern, they conclude, is fit for porcelain.
