What a great water pitcher, large and capacious yet managing a graceful silhouette!  The soft slightly off-white body is decorated with Boote's "Summertime" transfer, a Japanesque arrangement of those grasses and butterflies which inhabit the childhood memories of so many of us. 

The pattern is trimmed with an elaborate chain design around inside and outside of the rim and down the handle.  To finish off the piece, Boote has added a bit of molded detail at the rim as well as a rope detail to the very servicable handle. 

We can only look at this piece from the viewpoint of Americans, however, as Americans, it is easy to imagine  this piece on those long sawhorse and plank tables set up under the trees for some summer get together during those halcyon times at the turn of the century.  This jug could also have appeared on any number of tables in works by William Dean Howells.
